Advice and Information – 9 December 2022

In December 2022 thousands of healthcare workers are set to strike across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, with many Manchester services affected. This page will give you the information you need to know and the dates of the upcoming strikes.

The Royal College of Nursing(RNC) is planning its first-ever strike action on December 15th and 20th across most of the UK.  According to the Royal College of Nursing Magazine, these strikes are set to last 12 hours on both days, likely between 8 am and 8 pm (RNC Magazine).

The Life-preserving care model will be put in place by the RNC which means certain areas of care will be exempt from staff strikes to prevent causing death or permanent disability including emergency services, urgent therapeutic services, and urgent diagnostics/assessments. The RNC Industrial Action Handbook says derogations beyond the life-preserving care model should be avoided, but it is entirely dependent on the individual workplace circumstances on any day of industrial action.

Moreover, thousands of ambulance workers including paramedics and call handlers are expected to strike on December the 21st. This includes the North West Ambulance Service. Unite has confirmed that more than 1,600 workers at the West Midlands, North West, and North East ambulance service trusts will strike however throughout the strike, Unite has said they will maintain essential emergency cover for patients.

UNISON, Unite, and the GMB have confirmed that members will take part in strike action with GMB members taking part in an additional strike day on Wednesday 28 December 2022.

These strikes mean it will be considerably more difficult for a person to receive the standard level of medical care on strike days. Please be mindful when you are attempting to book an appointment on any of these days as you may be unable to receive the treatment you need.

The confirmed strike days are as follows:

  • December 15th – Nurses
  • December 20th – Nurses
  • December 21st – Ambulance Staff
  • December 28th – Ambulance Staff
